Total distance covered: 3495 nautical miles
Location: St. Anne in Martinique
We crossed an ocean!!! After a wonderful sunny day of sailing yesterday we arrived in St. Anne in Martinique at night. At sunset we had LAND-HO seeing the mountain of St. Lucia. Then we sat together in the cockpit and really enjoyed the last evening at sea. The light pollution and beacons of Martinique were getting closer and the smell of land took us by surprise after 19 days on the ocean. We had good wind until the end and zick zacked our way to the southern tip of the island. When we wanted to drop anchor between many other boats, however, the electric anchor winch did not work. The remote got wet when waves were breaking over the bow during the passage. We had to redo the anchor manoeuvre trying to drop the anchor manually. Fortunately, the winch still works when lifting the anchor, otherwise it would be quite a workout to pull in the heavy anchor with chain. Then we all crawled in our bunks enjoying the silence that seemed so strange to us at first and slept soundly. Today we will check through customs. As soon as we are allowed to go ashore, we will reward ourselves with a delicious meal in a local restaurant and celebrate our arrival extensively! We made it! We managed to fulfill our big dream to sailing across the Atlantic ocean with our own boat. When we bought and refitted the boat in the middle of last year, our goal was always to sail across to the Caribbean. Having done that, we know that our sailing adventure is far from over. It’s way too much fun! First, we will explore the Caribbean Sea for a few months and visit as many islands as possible. We will then decide where to go when the hurricane season approaches.
We regularly share experiences with photos and videos on Instagram (@ porqueno.sailing). If you liked the reports of the crossing, I will continue sharing personal impressions of our experiences. We look forward to sharing our adventures with you, especially at strange times like now. Stay healthy and best regards from the super excited Porky crew!
